Traditional Tattoo Aftercare

How to Care for a Tattoo With Traditional Aftercare

Follow these instructions only if your artist recommended traditional aftercare without an adhesive film or aftercare gel.

This method is intended for individuals who are unable to use adhesive films or aftercare gels.

Do not combine this method with Derm Shield, InkBeetle Gel, or another aftercare method unless your artist specifically instructs you to do so.

Peeling and Moisturizing

Begin moisturizing only when the tattoo feels dry or starts to peel during days 4–14.

Patting a Tattoo dry with a disposable paper towel

Day 1

Initial Bandage

After completing the tattoo, the artist will clean and dry the area and apply a sterile, non-adherent dressing (Tattoo Armour).

Keep it in place for the time indicated by your artist, generally 2–4 hours.

Remove the Dressing Sooner If

Remove it sooner if it becomes wet, saturated, dirty, loose, or contaminated.

Do not reuse the dressing or cover the tattoo again unless instructed by your artist.

First Cleaning

4 Hours After the Tattoo

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly.
  2. Carefully remove the dressing. If it sticks, moisten it with lukewarm water; do not pull forcefully.
  3. Create a lather in your hands using a mild, fragrance-free antibacterial bar soap.
  4. Gently wash the tattoo with your palm and fingertips to remove plasma, ink, blood, and visible residue.
  5. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
  6. Pat dry with a clean, disposable paper towel.
  7. Allow the tattoo to air-dry completely for 10–15 minutes.
  8. Leave the tattoo clean, dry, and uncovered.
Important Cleaning Rules

Do not place the soap bar directly on the tattoo. Do not scrub or use your fingernails.

Clean and Dry Healing

Days 1–3

  • Repeat the cleaning process every 8–12 hours, or approximately twice daily.
  • Keep the tattoo clean, completely dry, and uncovered.
  • Wear clean, loose, breathable clothing.
  • Avoid friction, excessive sweating, and unnecessary contact.
  • Do not wash excessively.
Do Not Apply Moisturizing Products

Do not apply ointment, lotion, oil, gel, or another moisturizing product during this stage.

Peeling and Moisturizing

Days 4–14

  • Continue washing the tattoo gently twice daily.
  • When the tattoo begins to feel dry or peel, apply a very thin layer of a lightweight, fragrance-free moisturizer.
  • Apply a very thin layer of After Inked® Tattoo Moisturizer & Aftercare Lotion over the tattoo and gently spread it until only a light amount remains on the skin.
  • Do not scratch, peel, rub, or remove scabs or loose skin.
  • Do not shave or exfoliate the area.
Warning Signs

Seek medical attention if you notice spreading redness, increasing pain or swelling, excessive warmth, yellow or green drainage, pus, foul odor, red streaks, fever, chills, or a severe allergic reaction.

Always maintain communication with your tattoo artist and keep them informed of any changes, concerns, or unusual symptoms during the healing process.
