Derm Shield Tattoo Aftercare

How to Care for a Tattoo Protected With Derm Shield

Follow these instructions only if your artist applied Derm Shield after your tattoo session.

This protective bandage helps protect the tattoo from bacteria, friction, and contamination.

Do not combine this method with any other aftercare method unless your artist specifically instructs you to do so.

1

FIRST BANDAGE

The first bandage
should be removed
24 hours after
it was applied.

2

SECOND BANDAGE

Keep the second
bandage in place
for a period of
4–6 days.

3

REMOVE IT EARLY

If it leaks, tears, becomes
contaminated, traps water, lifts
enough to expose the tattoo, or
causes a possible allergic reaction.

How do you use Dermshield to heal a tattoo

Day 1

After the Tattoo

The artist will apply a Derm Shield protective bandage immediately after finishing the tattoo. This bandage protects the area from bacteria, friction, and contamination.

REMOVE THE BANDAGE SOONER IF:

It leaks, tears, becomes contaminated, or lifts enough to expose the tattoo.

First Bandage Change

24 Hours After Your Tattoo

Remove the first bandage after 24 hours due to the accumulation of plasma, ink, and a small amount of blood underneath the film. This accumulation, commonly called an “ink pocket,” is generally normal.

Initial Cleaning

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before touching the tattoo.
  • Gently wet the tattoo with lukewarm water.
  • Wet your hands and create a lather using a mild, fragrance-free antibacterial bar soap.
  • Using the foam in your clean hands, gently wash the tattoo with your palm and fingertips.
  • Rinse the area thoroughly with lukewarm water until all soap, plasma, ink, and visible residue have been removed from the skin.
  • Gently pat the tattoo dry with a clean, disposable paper towel.
  • Allow the tattoo to air-dry completely for 10–15 minutes before applying a new adhesive film.

Important Cleaning Rules

Do not rub or apply the bar of soap directly to the tattoo. Do not use a cloth towel.

Applying the Second Bandage

  • Make sure the tattoo is completely clean and dry before applying the second bandage. Do not apply cream, ointment, or oil underneath the film.
  • If necessary, clean only the intact skin surrounding the tattoo with 70% isopropyl alcohol, remaining approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) away from the tattooed skin. Do not allow the alcohol to touch the tattoo. Let the skin dry completely.
  • With clean hands, apply a new Derm Shield, extending it beyond all edges of the tattoo.
  • Smooth the film carefully to prevent wrinkles, air channels, and large bubbles that could compromise the seal.
  • Leave the second bandage in place for 4–6 days, unless your artist or the product manufacturer provides different instructions.

Remove the Bandage Immediately If

Remove the bandage immediately if it leaks, tears, becomes contaminated, traps water, or lifts enough to expose the tattoo.

Remove it promptly if you experience intense burning, excessive itching, hives, blisters, spreading redness, or another possible allergic reaction. Wash the area and contact your tattoo artist. Seek medical attention if the reaction is severe or continues to worsen.

After Removing the Second Derm Shield

Day 4 and Beyond

  1. Wash the tattoo twice daily using lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free antibacterial bar soap.
  2. Create the lather in your clean hands. Do not rub the bar of soap directly on the tattoo.
  3. Rinse thoroughly and gently pat dry with a clean, disposable paper towel. Do not rub or use a cloth towel.
  4. Allow the tattoo to air-dry completely for 10–15 minutes.
  5. Apply a very thin layer of After Inked® Tattoo Moisturizer & Aftercare Lotion over the tattoo and gently spread it until only a light amount remains on the skin.

Use Only a Thin Layer

Do not overapply. The tattoo should feel lightly moisturized, not greasy or sticky.
