Color is at the heart of my work. I’m Frank, a tattoo artist specializing in custom color realism in the Kansas City area. My designs combine realistic detail with bold color contrasts, from recognizable portraits and animals to imaginative compositions that bring several ideas together.
Every project starts with your idea and the area you want to tattoo. Placement, scale, and the relationship between the colors help shape the composition, whether it is a standalone piece or part of a larger project. Explore a selection of my work below.

Color, Contrast & Composition
Color realism brings depth to a tattoo through light, shadow, and carefully placed color. Soft transitions give faces and objects dimension, while stronger contrasts help the main subject stand out. The palette also shapes the mood, from natural tones to unexpected combinations.
In this Buddha tattoo, warm orange and pink tones contrast with cooler blues and greens across the face. Deep shadows define the features, while highlights give them dimension. The surrounding flowers introduce softer shapes that balance the portrait and connect the colors throughout the piece.

Color Tattoos on a Larger Scale
A larger tattoo gives the design room to develop across the body. The main subjects, background, and areas of contrast need to work together, both when viewed up close and when seen as a whole.
In this eagle and American flag sleeve, the blue background sets off the eagle’s head, while the red and white folds carry the composition down the arm. The design connects the shoulder and forearm through color and movement.

Color Tattoo FAQs
Color realism uses shading, color transitions, and highlights to give subjects a lifelike appearance. Other approaches may emphasize outlines, simplified shapes, or exaggerated features. My work also includes surreal compositions that combine realistic details with imaginative elements.
Yes. You can bring references or describe the colors and mood you like. We’ll discuss a palette that suits the subject, your skin tone, and any existing tattoos nearby. You don’t need to arrive with every detail decided.
The right size depends on the amount of detail and the placement. Faces, textures, and compositions with several subjects need enough space to remain readable. If an idea is too complex for the area you have in mind, we can discuss simplifying it or adjusting the size.
